The Maryland State Police Aviation Command has been in operation since 1961 and we continually strive to make it the best public safety aviation unit in the country. We provide service to Maryland and its neighbors from our eight helicopter sections that are located throughout the State. We also have an in-house, state-of-the-art maintenance facility staffed by full-time Command Maintenace Technicians. Each section is staffed by a crew consisting of a pilot and a Trooper/flight paramedic. Currently, we are recruiting civilian pilots.
The hiring process for helicopter pilots is rigorous due to the challenging nature of the job. The large majority of our missions are medevac landings at non-airport locations such as highways, parking lots and fields. You will work with your Trooper/flight paramedic to hoist stranded and injured persons from dangerous locations. You will assist ground police units with searches for criminals as well as missing persons. The Command's helicopters are often requested to provide observation and coordination in high-speed vehicle persuits.
As a Pilot in the Maryland State Police Aviation Command, you will be flying the Eurocopter AS365N Dauphin. The minimum requirements for employment with the Command as a Helicopter Pilot are as follows:
Once you are selected for employment with the Maryland State Police as a Helicopter Pilot you will undergo transition training in the Eurocopter AS365N Dauphin. This training requires approximately three months to complete, depending upon your level of experience. Upon completion of your initial training, you will be given an assignment at one of our eight helicopter sections. Flight crews typically work either 10-hour or 12-hour shifts.
