Trooper 4 was the 4th aviation section to be formed within the Maryland State Police. Trooper 4 began operations on weekends only in the summer of 1977 out of the Berlin Barracks. In the summer of 1978, Trooper 4 began operating out of Salisbury-Wicomico Airport and in January of 1979 Trooper 4 became a full time 24 hour Section. In July of 1990 the State of Maryland purchased a 10,000 square foot hangar on the Salisbury – Wicomico Airport to house the States newly acquired Dauphin helicopters. This is the present home of Trooper 4. Trooper 4 flew the Bell Jet Ranger in 1978 and the Bell UH1-B in 1979, returning to the Jet Ranger in 1980 which it operated until it was replaced by the new twin engine Eurocopter SA365N1 Dauphin helicopter in 1989. Trooper 4 is a 24 hour a day operation staffed with 5 pilots and 5 trooper paramedics. The primary service area of Trooper 4 are the lower four counties of Marylands Eastern Shore, Wicomico, Worcester, Dorchester and Somerset and second call to the upper Eastern Shore of Maryland as well as operations in lower Delaware and the eastern shore of Virginia.
